The research conducted by the Molecular Diagnostics group is focused on development, standardization and validation of molecular methods. Furthermore, these methods are applied in a wide range of research projects with the common goal of improving food safety. We are located in Mørkhøj, Søborg<br />
<br />
<strong>Job description</strong> <br />
The fellowship will be part of a larger, international research project (BIOTRACER, see <a href="http://www.biotracer.org">www.biotracer.org</a>), focusing on improved biotraceability of unintended micro-organisms and their substances in food and feed chains. The aim of the PhD project is to develop and validate culture-independent and DNA-based methods for detection, enumeration, and characterization of foodborne pathogens, such as Salmonella and Campylobacter. Methods that will be used include real-time quantitative PCR and DNA microarrays, together with standard culture based techniques. These methods will then be used to study different aspects of food and feed safety, for example the attachment of Salmonella to meat surfaces and survival over time in feed samples. The project will be performed in close collaboration with national and international partners involved in the BIOTRACER project.<br />

<strong>Qualifications</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Master’s degree in natural science, veterinary or human medicine, as an engineer or similar.</li>
<li>Fulfils the requirements as set by the Technical University of Denmark: <a href="http://www.dtu.dk/English/education/Phd_Education">www.dtu.dk/English/education/Phd_Education</a></li>
<li>Practical laboratory experience with molecular microbiology, and basic knowledge of food safety</li>
<li>Theoretical biological background, and a strong drive for obtaining results</li>
<li>Interest in working and communicating in an international research network.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Approval and Enrolment</strong> <br />
The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. <strong>Salary and appointment terms</strong><br />
The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students. The period of employment is 3 years.<br />
